The Desert Claim wind farm is located in the northeastern Kittitas Valley, an area that is ideal for wind power generation. Unlike wind
farms consisting of turbines along ridgelines, Desert Claim is located on relatively flat, open terrain. That reduces the effect on views, since the
turbines are well below the skyline.

The Desert Claim site consists of 5,200 acres of rural land in one contiguous area, with parcels owned by five landowners and the
state Department of Natural Resources. Desert Claim Wind Power leases the land, providing the private landowners with additional financial support
for their farming and ranching activities. These now include growing hay and raising several hundred head of cattle. The agricultural activities are expected
to continue after the wind farm begins operation.

The area is already part of the state's power transmission system. Three major transmission lines, with their transmission towers, cross
the southern, central and northern section of the property. Operated by the Bonneville Power Administration and Puget Sound Energy, the transmission
lines carry power from Columbia River dams to Western Washington population centers. Shorter distances to transmission lines reduce power-line costs passed on to ratepayers.
